Blog #12: Cybercrime Task Force Targets Sexual Predators

This week I found an article discussing cybercrimes taking place and a task force hard at work to catch sexual predators. This article is titled “Cybercrime Task Force Targets Sexual Predators” by David Goodhue. At the beginning of the article it discusses a story where these two older age men are traveling to Key Largo to have sexual encounters with a 15-year-old girl that they had both been chatting with online. Little did they know that the 15-year-old girl was actually a woman who was an undercover detective. The two men were arrested and charged with a felony right on the spot. This article also discusses several more cases where detectives are targeting sexual predators online by acting if they were a younger child. A statement in the article was made following the stories of many predators being arrested and it states: “It means we do have an issue that we have to address,” Mehler said this week. “We’re fighting it as it happens,” Mixon said. This task force has more than 2,000 members and has led to almost 30,000 arrests.
This article is very significant because it shows that there is a way to target and catch criminals and predators committing cybercrimes. This approach that the task force is using seems to be very successful and has caught thousands of predators. The Internet is constantly being used around the world and its almost impossible to secure everything on the Internet so using an approach such as this one will allow predators to be caught in the act by undercover detectives. Another significance of this article is that it offers a website for parents that gives tips on how to protect children while they are on the computer. “With the growing sophistication of cell phones and other electronic handheld devices, keeping kids safe from online predators is a constant challenge.” This quote shows the need of parents monitoring what their children are doing online. “Parents need to know that it can happen to their children, it is a problem and parents have to keep their eyes open.”

Cyber crimes are scary. We tend rely on the internet for a lot and a lot of our information is up there. It is crazy that people can get your information. The predators that lurk around on the innternet are also a problem. They can easily get younger age groups. I hate to say it but a lot of the times they are more gullible. I agree parents need to monitor what their children are doing on the computer. The children could be getting themselves into things that they have no business dealing with.
