Blog 6: China Landslide: All 18 Children Killed

The article that I chose was about 18 children that are missing. A landslide that buried a primary school in China caused the death of 18 children and 1 adult. Also, nearby homes were affected by the landslide. Around 800 people were forced to leave their homes. The week that the landslide occurred was a holiday for the students but because of an earthquake that took place last month they were making up the days. Last month 3 buildings of the school were damaged due to the earthquake and were later demolished. The article stated how safety in the schools has been a major problem since the devastating earthquake in China in 2008 which killed tens of thousands of people. Many of the school buildings collapsed due to the earthquake, which lead to the public being upset over the bad construction and the lack of safety measures.

The construction for buildings in China is not only dangerous but it is clearly unsafe for people to live in as well as for children to attend school in. For this country to have so many natural disasters it would seem that they would be able to help smaller counties to build schools and homes that are up to par with the correct construction codes. There should be some type of assistance for families who have lost their homes and a way that the government can pay to restore schools under the right conditions. So that this won’t continue to happen something should be done about the construction materials that are used or available to the people in China so that something like this doesn’t occur again.
