Terrorist Designation Removal
Earlier this week Secretary of
State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, officially removed the Mujahedeen Khalq from the
state department’s formally designated terrorist organizations list. M.E.K was
officially known as an Iranian opposition group currently located in Iraq.
Their removal from the state department’s list is going to make it easier for
the current 3,000 members to find new countries to settle in. Even though their
name was removed, the United States Government has said that it would not
forget the past actions of terrorism that the M.E.K. lead against United States
citizens in 1970 Iran and on United States soil in 1992. The United States Government
has also issued a formal concern about “accusations that the group had
committed abuses against some of its own members”. When the process of removal
began In order to officially get their name removed from the state department’s
list, the United States government took into account the group’s recent public denouncement
of violence and “the absence of confirmed acts of terrorism by the group, known
as the M.E.K. for more than a decade.
I believe that this was the right
move for the United States to do. I also believe that the state department also
handled it very diplomatically. A public renouncement of violence and a
confirmed absence of terrorist acts for more than a decade should be enough for
the Mujahedeen Khalq’s repentance. I really agree with the way the State Department
said that they would not forget those past terrorist actions of the M.E.K. In order to fully be prepared against future
terrorist attacks I believe that it is good to remember who is and who isn’t capable
of these kinds of atrocities. By choosing not to forget it really puts the
truth into perspective. The state department handled this situation very diplomatically
