According to the University World News, crime rates against international students studying abroad are on the rise. In past years, the safety of the destination country has been at the bottom on the list of student concerns, but in recent years has risen to number five. It is only behind the quality of the school, qualifications, future careers, and reputation. The acts of violence have included discrimination, street crimes, racism and sexism, and terrorist attacks. In extreme cases the violence has escalated to murder. An Indian student, Anuj Bidve, was killed as he was studying abroad by a UK native. This and several other incidences like it have caused Indian parents to have extreme fear when considering allowing their children to study abroad. These acts of violence are occurring worldwide against students of all ethnic backgrounds. Despite this incident and several others like, the UK remains one of the safest places to study abroad. Surprisingly, Australia has one of the poorest reputations when it comes to safety and crimes against international students. Recent reports have shown that a heightened sense of community, better integration, and proactive universities can help lower the crime rates against the students and make their experience a better one. Many researchers still believe that even if a country’s safety reputation is tarnished, if the universities are reputable, students will continue to come.
This article on crime rates against students studying abroad was very data packed and informational. It gave many statistics from studies and the researcher’s opinion on the matter. The article had a global perspective, and presented the material that way. However, I think that a graph or chart on some countries throughout the world and their crime rates would have been very helpful in understanding the subject. Explaining the acts of violence and crimes a bit more thoroughly would have also increased the depth of this article. Overall, the article gave great informational and explained the subject matter in a very understandable manner.
