Blog 7: Taliban Gun Down Girl Who Spoke Up for Right

Malala Yousafzai is a female, teenage advocate for women's rights in Pakistan through increased education and also the rights of children. Yousafzai, because of her popularized advocacy, was nominated in 2011 for the International Peace Prize and was the very first recepient of the National Youth Peace Prize in Pakistan. She recently developed an interest in politics, also. Yousafzai wanted to be a doctor and knew that such an ambition would take courage in such a male dominated and patriarchial society as the Middle East. Because of her open advocacy for women's and children's rights in relation to education policy, Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by Taliban enforcers who claim her crusade for education rights were "obscenity." Taliban spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan, even went as far to say that even if she did survive the shooting they would "try to kill her again." This act of violence against a women only further exemplifies the extent of brutality of the Taliban and the extent to which this violent group will go to oppress women in the Middle East.

Malala Yousafzai's shooting is an illustration of the continuation of violence against women, particularly highlighted in this developing region of the world, so that they may be oppressed and disadvantaged in the present and in the future. Violence against women has been a tactic that allows men to hold positions of power and feelings of esteem despite increased women's rights movements and accomplishments elsewhere in the world. However, in order for developing countries, such as Pakistan (the site of this tragic incident), to develop and prosper at their desired level, women must be given rights to education and protection since women have proved to be one of the many sources that lead to political, economic, and social prosperity.
