Blog 8: Mother-in-law beheads daughter for refusing prostitution

Woman beheaded for refusing prostitution

20 year-old Mah Gul , of Afghanistan, was beheaded for refusing to prostitute herself and one of the killers was her mother-in-law and the other was the cousin of the mother-in-law.  In the report to police, the women agree to the beheading of this young woman.  There was no found evidence suggesting the father-in-law or the husband was involved.  The women explain that they went to visit the daughter while her husband, who works as a baker, was away working.  They tried to convince her to take part in prostitution; however, when she refused they beheaded her as punishment.  This is just one of the many examples of how human rights are not largely taken into consideration under the Afghan government, especially for women.  In a statement from authorities, this type of crime against women are not uncommon where they are often raped, forced into prostitution, or forced into marriage at an early age.   They are often traded by family members for things such as settling a debt or rivalry among families.  Similar incidents described in the article include the defacing of Afghan woman, Sahar Gul, whose nose and ears were chopped off for running away from her husband’s home.  Just recently, Taliban members publicly executed a woman for the accusation being an adulterer.

The beheading of this young girl by members of her new family is unjustifiable and cruel.  They should have more respect for one another to except the fact that it was something she did not feel comfortable doing with her body.  I really hope this young woman’s killers are brought to justice for their brutal crime.
