Blog 11 : Gag Law

In Costa Rica there has been a law established called the Gag Law. This law states that anyone who posts things about the government will be penalized and sentenced to many year in jail. The public of Costa Rica says this is a violation of their right to free speech and that this law needs to be repealed immediately. This law puts journalist at risk and human rights organizations who report of the conditions and cruel punishment the government allows their citizens to go through. This case is being brought to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and chargers are planned to be failed against the president of Costa Rica. The Inter- American Court of Human Rights job is to uphold and protect the basic human rights and freedoms in the Americans. In taking this to the court the lawyers plan to declare this law unconstitutional proving that it is a violation of basic freedoms of speech.
This Gag Law is another way to silence those who try and put our the things that the government is doing that isn't in the best interest for the people. The way to solve this problem is by having more people speak out on the issue to try and get it repealed. It’s a good idea that the lawyers stepped up and took this all the way to the judicial system. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and should have a right to speak out on things they don't think are right. Punishing people who have different views than you do are wrong and this should be put to an end. This is a growing problem around the world and needs to be addressed. The government punishing people who try to speak out in order to put fear into those thinking about it, but their are always those who continue on and those are people the world needs more of.
