State Votes a Global Victory for Gay Rights
Results from Tuesday night’s election also brought in many
other victories around the country.
Three states have legalized and accepted the rights of Gay and Lesbians
to be legally married. The states of
Maryland, Maine, and Washington have all joined in granting them the rights of
those who were recently refused of these rights. Although voters have voted to support same
sex marriage, there are challengers of the bill. They have gotten enough signatures to
possibly have the bill overturned. Until
then the bill same sex marriage is still legal in Washington State. So far at least 30 states have had the
opportunity to vote and legalize the rights of gay and lesbians to marry. The election results put a halt to a growing
trend of states voting no to the proposition of legalizing gay marriage. Even in our state of North Carolina, when
voters were given the opportunity to vote on gay rights and marriage, the
proposition failed. After Tuesday’s
election, gay marriage is now legal in 9 of the 50 states.
Same sex is legal in many other countries outside of the
United States. Countries such as
Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, South
Africa, Mexico, etc have legalized same sex marriage where it is not only legal
in their home country, but it is also allowed to be recognized nationwide. They are expected to have even more countries
participate in legalizing same sex marriage.
Allowing same sex marriage to be legalized for many states
shows the progress of the country.
Things are changing and everyone is finally starting to get with the
program by voting to have equal rights.
The vote to legalize same sex marriage is only the beginning of
continued acceptance no matter the characteristics a person may have.
