Blog 1: Africa Health Scorecard to improve Children Mortality Rates

Marthe Van Der Wolf wrote an article on Africa, in which she states the significant in score cards to reduce mortality rates in children. Africa is high in mortality rates in children due to not having access to resources and treatments. The score card which was produced by UNICEF is a way to provide information on resources, treatments, and on policy issues. This will create a sense of what is needed to prevent death rates in children. Congo Africa is one of many who mortality rates are at its highest, “Still today, 158 out of 1,000 children die in Congo during birth”. Wolf states that, “Liberia is currently the best scoring African country by reducing it’s under five-mortality rate by 67 percent.” This incentive of the scoreboard will help improve in numbers and the health of many children living in Africa today. The main causes of mortality rates are due to Malaria, diarrhea, and pneumonia. The score board will provide funding and information on many diseases in which causes children to die at a young age. Implanting the scoreboard in Africa will bring down child’s deaths to 20 per 1000 lives. Africa is using this plan and by 2015 mortality rates should decline by the usage of scoreboards.

Africa is one of many who struggles in health care. I feel that the scoreboards are a step closer to helping in health as well as decreasing deaths. The UNICEF made a great start and by reading this article I can see that the death rates have went down steadily. Today, many only care about the people around us. We never stop and think of what’s going on across the world. African children are in harm everyday of many diseases as well as health care due to the lack of funds and knowledge. We the people can help by providing resources and knowledge on how to prevent birth deaths.
