Blog #1: Russia's migrant workers dream of making long journey home/Migration

According to the Irish Times Russia has approximately 10 million migrants that live and work there. Many of the migrants are from Central Asia who have left their home country in search of a safer and more secure lifestyle. Many of the migrants have come to Moscow where they find jobs such as working at construction sites, selling fruits and vegetables around the town and working in the cafes. One of the migrants at the beginning of this news article, Murat, a twenty-six year old stated that he had left behind a wife and his three-year old daughter because back home in Uzbekistan he would be making approximately $500-$600 a month which was not enough to pay for all the bills. However, in the Moscow warehouse that he currently works in he can make double that amount and still have some money left over to provide for his wife and child back home. Zhanna Zaionchkovskaya, direct of the Migration Laboratory as the Russian Academy of Sciences states that migrants are the key to fill the shortages in the labor market. Students who are currently graduating school and going into the workforce would not agree with her, they state that the migrant workers are the ones to blame for work shortage and lower incomes.Polls indicate that 67% of the native Russians believe that the migrants are taking away the work opportunities that are available.

After reading this article I was surprised to learn that many Central Asians are fleeing to Russia for a better life and job security. Russia contains a large population of people and according to this article many of them are migrants who have come from other places around Asia and Europe. I believe that migrating to a new country is an opportunity that more people should take part in. It provides those people opportunities to be freed from religious prosecution, find better jobs, and provide a better lifestyle for their family. Illegal immigration is one way to migrate from one place to the next, however, it is safe and more secure to come to a new country legally because no one can tell you that you must leave or provide documentation to every legal authority.
