On February 5, 2013 lawmakers voted in favor of
a proposal to legalize gay marriage, making a remarkable step for the LGBT
community in Britain. At this time same-sex couples are allowed to enter into a
civil union with all the same benefits as a marriage, however many argue that a
relationship between homosexual and heterosexual partners should be treated the
same. Although members of the Parliament voted with strong views on both sides,
it was clear that the majority vote was to progress with the changing times
rather than to take a step backwards. The full progression of the bill could
take months, and would most likely not go into effect until 2015, however it is
a step in the right direction.
I applaud this recognition of a need for
equality and acceptance for all. Although two years of waiting for the bill to
go into effect is two years too long, the public message of a fight for
acceptance is one that will multiply as this social movement takes flight. Not
only is this an excellent massage for the people of Britain, it will also have a
large impact on nations around the world. More and more people will feel
encouragement to voice their opinions and fight towards a progressive, and more
accepting society, which in turn, will encourage more and more law makers to do
so as well. This message of acceptance and embracement for all things new and
different is one that is needed around the world.
