In Papua New Guinea, there has been a recent trend of women being burned for witchcraft. This past week there was a 20-year old burned alive in front of a crowd because of the accusations that she was involved in witchcraft. The UN is trying to tell Papua New Guinea to end these attacks and make sure the killers are held responsible for these killings. The UN is trying to urge the country to educate the citizens so that further cases such as these do not happen again. The woman was killed because she was accused of using sorcery to kill a six-year old boy.
This fact that this can go on in different countries is so sad. Something that the US experienced hundreds of years ago is starting to surface from these other countries. From the article, it did not seem as if the government was taking it as serious as the situation really is. People should not persecuted for the beliefs they follow. Although the article did not give much information on exactly why this woman was burned, it should be noted that this behavior is unacceptable for any country. I think the UN stepping in and trying to steer the government into the right plan of action was the best thing that can happen right now. However, it is completely up to the government which plan of action they choose to pursue. It is just sad that people get killed every day for their beliefs and there does not seem to be an end to it.
