All of the American troops have pulled out of Kandahar this week, but it wasn't a smooth process. The pullout occured just as Taliban fighters were returning back in from the winter havens in Pakistan. In a state of pulling out, the American troops were vulnerable, as they had taken down their surveillance and early-warning systems.
The Taliban are very much aware of American withdrawl, and from the brief battle in last week's pull out in Kandahar, they seem to be waiting for it. What does this mean for not only the Afghan forces, but the people of Afghanistan? Attacks from Taliban forces are elevated even more than before. United States occupation has helped Afghan forces with technologically advanced weaponry and surveillance, yet the Taliban threat is on the cusp of spreading just as the U.S. troops withdrawl.
From a social stand point, U.S. withdrawl would be devastating to the civilians of Afghanistan. Yes, Osama bin Laden is now dead and coalition forces have gotten what most consider a beurocratic ball rolling, but the society itself has grown up in warfare for the past ten years and is still in no state to support itself from a military stand point. Pull out, although favorable for American families, is not yet a considerable option.
