Discovery in Jamaica

Jamaica may have found its way out of an economic turmoil. On Monday, Jamaica and Japan are going to start a pilot project. The idea of this project is to extract seventeen elements that are being used in smartphones, plasma screens, wind turbines, satellites and numerous other high-tech products. They are planning to take thirty tons in both Jamaica and Japan and going to treat it with acid to get the elements out, but they are going to need advance technology to isolate and purify the elements. The Prime Minister of Jamaica thinks that this discovery will bring money into the country and will improve the standards of life. There is a lot of this red mud deposit stored in ponds in Jamaica and it should be a lot easier and safer to harvest. If this works out for these countries, they could be in competition with China who right now is the main supplier of the rare earth elements. The advance technology that is going to be used to isolate and purify the red mud to get the seventeen elements could be helpful in boosting the economy in Jamaica. I think that there is a risk because they are not sure if this is going to work out. There is a lot of funding that is going to be required to have this advance technology. Technology in these countries is going to be beneficial to surviving in this global economy as the world keeps advancing with its products. 4:00pm 2/8/13 Maggie Manley http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/02/04/3217155/jamaica-breaks-ground-on-rare.html
