IBM’s Watson is now a doctor that sends treatment plans for patients to health care providers. The supercomputer is an utilization management meaning a combination lung cancer specialist and expert in the arcane branch of health insurance. Watson’s advice can bought or rented by hospitals and healthcare networks. The size of Watson has drastically shrunk from a master bedroom to a pizza-box also the processing speed increased by 240%. Accurate treatment decision making percentage will increase by 40%. Healthcare pros can only make 50% of accurate decisions but Watson has shown to be accurate 90% of the time. For cancer diagnoses Watson is not up to the level. With today’s cloud system, distributing the information could reach anywhere. The new IBM’s Watson could be consider “the most powerful tool we’ve seen to data for improving care and lowering everyone’s cost via standardization and reduced error.” It provides a couple choices for the optimal treatment. Two years ago, Watson’s medical knowledge was on the level of a second-year medical student. IBM’s partner Memorial Sloan Kettering allowed them to access tens of thousands of cancer patient records and histories. Watson analyzed an array of data such as 650,000 pieces of medical evidence, 25,000 training cases, and 2 million pages of text.
Interesting to see the supercomputer once on Jeopardy is now leading towards healthcare. Watson will become an important part of health care in the future. The accuracy and availability of Watson could help all parts of the world. The nurses or doctors will type in the symptoms then it sends treatment plans back to them.
