In Tanzania, there has been an increase in attacks on people with albinism. Since January, there have been 5 reported attacks, including a 7 month old. The Human Rights Official for the UN declared a statement saying that she was against these acts and that they really needed to stop. However, the prosecution rate for the people committing these killings and acts are rather rare. Since 2000, there have been over 72 murders of people with albinism however there have only been 5 prosecuted cases. The representative also is trying to work with the Tanzanian government to provide medical treatment to the victims that are still alive as well as legal support. There is a push is a stricter enforcement and protection of the individuals with albinism in Tanzania.
I had heard of these killings a few years back but I did not realize that it was still going on today. The fact that people are hurting and killing children and adults with a condition they cannot control is so sad. The ones that do survive are often so harmed that they have such a hard time moving on with their life. I think the UN representative did the right thing making the statement to help others become aware of the situation, however, I think that the Tanzanian government really does need to crack down on this. If there are people committing this crime, they do need to be prosecuted for it. I do not think they should be able to walk away from this and they need to be held accountable for their actions.
