I had recently posted a blog about a certain character named
Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, a significant figure in the narcotics trafficking in
Mexico, and his alleged death during an intense gunfight between two different
cartels. Unfortunately, it seems, Guzman, aka “Chapo,” was not killed. In fact,
news reporters are now releasing information that there might have been no gun
fight.
Guzman is no doubt Mexico’s largest and most potent drug
lord. When initial reports came out about his death, there was a sigh of relief
for Mexico. Now, with new reports of this being misinformation, the country is
once again in tension. Guzman is the
most wanted man in the Western hemisphere. He heads one of the oldest and most
powerful cartels in Mexico which is estimated to be responsible for half of the
cocaine trafficking to the United States and an estimated 10,000 deaths in
Mexico’s drug war. In fact, the United States is offering a five million dollar
reward for any information leading to Guzman’s capture. For the United States,
Guzman was deemed “public enemy number 1.” The last guy to get this title was
Al Capone.
The Mexican people are somewhat displeased with the help, or
lack thereof, of the United States in helping Mexican authorities hunt Guzman
down. One Mexican crime reporter says, “The idea that he is the world’s most
wanted drug lord amuses me. “I ask myself: who’s looking for him, then? He
keeps doing business and his influence is actually growing.”
