Blog #6 - A Globalized Curriculum

Due to our increasingly globalized world, India has recently seen an uptick in demand for International Baccalaureate programs developed for primary and secondary school students. As compared with the more traditional Indian school system, which has a far more rigid, assessment foundation based heavily on rote memorization, the I.B. programs are touted for offering "better student-to-teacher ratios, and a more holistic and inquiry-based system of learning." Receiving an I.B. diploma from high school allows foreign university admissions offices a system of measurement that is internationally reliable. Also, many people believe the I.B. program to be a sounder approach to teaching which results in students being better prepared to work in a globalized world.

Others claim that the I.B. program is "elitist because of its expense." Annual tuition in Mumbai can cost  up to $16,000 USD for 11th and/or 12th grades. The more affluent Indian families enroll their students' in the I.B. program in hopes that they will attend universities overseas where they can gain the sort of worldly experience that is so valued in the global marketplace. In fact, according to the principal of B.D. Somani International school in Mumbai, "85 percent of our students want to go overseas after the 12th to study.

This change in mindset has been reflected in the availability of the I.B. programs. As a result, the number of schools in "India offering I.B. grew from 10 in 2002 to 97 in 2012." And their graduates are successfully entering top universities like "Columbia, Cornell, Brown, Oxford and the London School of Economics." Indian parents are increasingly understanding the need to introduce their children to this different learning structure, also known as "out-of-the-box thinking", while other parents remain skeptical, favoring the more rigid techniques of rote memorization currently taught in the traditional Indian-system.
