Blog 7: India's Coal

India’s Coal Power Plants Kill Tens of Thousands Every Year, Study Says

India’s coal powered power plants produce about 60% of all electricity in the country.  There are 111 plants and no regulations on pollution besides particle size.  The coal used by these power plants is lower quality than the US and other countries use so more pollution is created because more coal has to be burned to produce the same amount of energy. The study stated that about 115,000 premature deaths are caused by coal power plants in India each year.  This is mostly children and the elderly more easily affected by air pollution.  There are almost no laws regulating pollution from the power plants.  Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are burned in the coal and released into the air without any attempt at preventing these toxic chemicals from flowing freely through the air.  In the future, many more power plants plan to be built and unless regulations are in place than the air pollution will kill many more per year.

India’s energy situation is at a very critical stage.  People are affected everyday by air pollution and coal power plants are a key reason for the pollution.  A greener energy would benefit the people of India especially with so many coal powered plants to be built in the near future.  Less pollution would prevent a good portion of pollution.  But changing to a greener energy would be very expensive and India being behind schedule as a developing nation would put them even farther behind.  Regulations to help make the power plants control what is released into the air.  The technologies needed are already used in many places around the world.  It would be expensive but it would be necessary to help the air pollution situation in India.
