Blog 7: Police brutality "alleged" at Sydney Gay Mardi Gras

The title of this article is ironically called “Police brutality alleged at Sydney Gay Mardi Gras”. Why is it ironic? If you were to watch the video, the “alleged” part of the title, should not be included. In the video, filmed Saturday night, March 2nd in Australia at the annual Sydney’s Gay Mardi Gras it depicts a man being thrown down on his face by police, then showing a police officer stepping on his back. Jamie Jackson, an 18 year old is the victim of this attack.

Although the video is short, and does not capture how this incident started, the father says, “Whatever happened before the footage started, he shouldn’t have been thrown like that, it’s just dangerous.” The article further states that in court the police will allege that he used offensive language, assaulted a police officer and resisted arrest. The video however, does not show him resisting arrest, but rather physically calm but crying.

Like stated in the article in agreement his father, although what happened to lead to the arrest was not shown, the police brutality was wrong. In the video, the cameraman is asked several times to shut off his camera, and asked why he is recording, which in itself says a lot.

It seems to be happening all over the world, police brutality or a lack of police responding. This is the fifth consecutive week I have found an article depicting this global social problem that haunts our society. From England, to South Africa, to India, to Mexico and even reaching Australia. Just as the chapter on Crime in our textbook states, one way to help decrease crime is to hold police officials to a higher standard.
