Blog #7 "Scientists Genetically Engineered 'Dead End' Mosquitos to Fight Dengue

Oxitec is a biotechnology firm in the United Kingdom. They engineered a breed of mosquito that cannot reproduce or offspring that die before maturity. These mosquitoes can prevent the spread of dengue. It has 2.3 million infections and 25,000 deaths per year. The major drawback could lead to the entire species to extinction. Aedes aegypti is the type of mosquitoes that the scientists engineered. When an Oxitec mosquito mates with a female, their offspring will die before reaching adulthood. Once these mosquitoes are released and start mating with one another the mosquito population will definitely decline. Dengue fever has a high risk of infection especially for half of the world’s population. It is transmitted by person to person. Dengue fever causes joint pain and flu-like symptoms there is no cure for the virus. The only prevention is spray insecticide and use nets to keep mosquitoes away. There are controversies using Oxitec mosquitoes because of the unknown consequences to disrupt natural ecosystems. In Florida, a petition with more 120,000 signatures stops Oxitec from releasing the mosquitoes. Genetically modified mosquitoes are cheaper and safer than widespread of spraying insecticides. Field tests are being conducted in Brazil and Malaysia.        Up to 85% of dengue-carrying mosquitoes were eliminated. Genetically modified insects will become standard use like genetically modified crops.
Oxitec mosquitoes will have a major impact on the health issues around the world. These mosquitoes can reduce the spread of dengue fever hopefully eliminate the virus. The technology advancement of GM insects are endless Oxitec has just touch the surface of biotechnology. It will lead to more different uses of GM insects.
