India Arrests Suspects in Swiss Rape Case

The police in India have arrested six men who were suspected to have taken part in the gang rape of a Swiss woman in the Madhya Predsh state of India Friday night. The the 39 year old woman and her husband were touring the poor Datia district by bicycle on their way to Agra to visit the famous Taj Mahal. On their way to Agra they set up camp overnight in a forest. As they were in their tent six men who lived nearby attacked them wielding sticks and stole about $185 from them, but more horrifically raped the woman in the presence of her husband. The six suspects who are now in the custody of the authorities have reportedly confessed to the crime. The criminals will go before a magistrate this coming Monday.
This attack took place just three months after the notorious rape case of the 23 year old who was gang raped and beaten in a moving bus occurred.  The physiotherapy student was gang raped, beaten and thrown out on the street bleeding and left for dead. She later died in a hospital in Singapore.
This new rape case is not taken lightly. The community of India has had enough of these heinous crimes and are taking action to raise awareness. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, one woman is raped every 20 minutes in India. These statistics are only based off of what is reported. Police estimate that only 4 out of 10 rapes are reported and this is due to the fact that victims fear of being shamed by their families and communities.
It makes me sick to see that all of this rape is occurring around the world. No person should ever be raped. The criminals cannot say that the victim asked for it either. No matter if a woman was dressed proactively, was drunk or whatever the case may be, no woman deserves to have this ever happen to them. In impoverished cultures such as India, the woman feel as if it is their fault that they were raped and feel shameful for what was done to them. I even saw a story that a 16 year old girl set herself on fire because she didn't want to face her family and friends after being raped. I'm glad to see that India is not taking these crimes halfheartedly. It's time to take serious action against these crimes and stop it once and for all.
