Blog 8: Japan to become the second largest solar market in the world

According to a new study by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), Japan is poised to become the second largest solar market in the world, surpassed only by China. This is most likely due to the incentives which offer above-market rates for any energy sources which are renewable. BNEF also suggests that the Fukushima nuclear power plant meltdown has played a large role in Japan's push for more renewable energy. Since the meltdown, Japan has closed all but two of their nuclear plants and has seen a remarkable surge of renewable energy sources. Japan has increased its solar planning to include projects on industrial rooftops as well as idled land, the main reason behind Bloomberg increasing their solar expectancy so quickly. There are some barriers that Japan will face, however, such as "system costs... that remain high by international standards and a lack of trained workers to install systems."

This was a very interesting article to read because we do not often think of Japan as being a leader in renewable resources. It is refreshing to see that after the catastrophe with the Fukushima nuclear power plant, Japan is trying to move away from nuclear power and push more renewable energies. The obstacles they will face could prove to be difficult to overcome, but since the technology is so rapidly expanding there is no reason why they should not be able to continue to grow their renewable energy projects.
