Fiji is a place where most people dream of vacationing. This can make it hard to believe the nine minute video of young men who are beaten in the bed of a pickup truck by police officers. The video depicts a man crying as he is repeatedly struck with a police baton then later switching to a metal rod. The video has sparked many public opinions. Commodore Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama, Fiji’s military leader was quoted saying that he stands by the men, and that they were doing their “duty in looking after the security of this nation and making sure we sleep peacefully at night.”
In contrast, Roseann Rife, an Amnesty spokeswoman commented saying, “The humiliation of the men and their injuries evident in the video is very serious… The subsequent brutal beating with batons is harrowing. It is torture.” This video surfacing last week is not anything new to the rumors surrounding police brutality in Fiji. Phil Goff, a member of New Zealand’s Parliament said in an interview, “All of us have heard stories that this has been happening and happening for a long time.” While the article gives background on Fiji’s police brutality issue, it does not give us a reason for the men being handcuffed, or what will happen to the police officials who did the beating. This is just another place where the violence of police officials is becoming a known problem globally.
