Blog 9: France Gay Marriage Debate Prompts Homophobic Assaults

Earlier this week, the French Senate voted in favor of a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, as well adoption from same-sex couples. This was a landmark move forward; however there has been a great deal of backlash from anti-gay protestors. These protestors claim that gay marriage and adoption is harmful to children and therefore should be banned, however these protestors are also becoming quite violent as they outwardly project their discrimination towards same-sex couples. Violece towards homosexual individuals and their supporters actually rose 30 percent from 2011 to 2012, and this violence has been brutal. The beating of Wilfred de Bruijn has been a prime example of this terrible backlash, and a picture of his beaten face has spread throughout France. This man was walking with his boyfriend when he was beaten, leaving him with bruises, two black eyes, a broken tooth, several fractures, and unconscious.
It is upsetting to see humans displaying such hatred and discrimination towards other humans simply on the basis of who they love. It is also disturbing that these anti-gay protestors claim to be protecting their children from harm, yet they are the ones being harmful. They are instilling this idea of hatred and discrimination into their own children, while the victims of this violence are simply trying to gain the same rights that these oppressors have. I am happy to see that France has taken this bill seriously, and that it will most likely be passed soon, however, I hope that they can instill the thought of equality and acceptance into the minds of those who oppose it.
