The UN Human Rights chief has been urging the US to close the detention center in Guantanamo. They say that keeping the inmates there is breaching the international law. The chief also said that she is disappointed in how the US is handling the situation and how they have committed themselves to closing it but have not yet been able to. The chief says this behavior goes against the US’s stance on human rights and weakens their stance concerning human rights elsewhere. She states that the US is in clear breach of international laws by keeping it open and that when other countries breach the laws, the US criticizes them for it. She said that all the inmates in Guantanamo are being mistreated and that she is trying to make sure that their rights are being observed while still in Guantanamo.
I think the UN has every right to be upset that it has been over 4 years since there was a commitment to closing Guantanamo. If any country is breaching the international law pertaining detainment, it needs to be shut down immediately. It isn’t right to hold people in jail when it is clearly against international law. I think the UN should step in more and try to help release the inmates instead of just being angry but at least they are taking the correct steps to ensure that the inmate’s human rights are being followed. As for the future, any detention center needs to closely follow international law so there is not a future situation such as this.
