The terrorist attack that took place in Nairobi’s Westgate
killed 67 people. Somalia’s Al Qaeda affiliate, Shabaab, called the killings of
the innocent shoppers as “an act of justice”.
The Shabaab reminded the people that it would attack in retaliation for
the Kenyan forces being present in Somalia. Westgate is a very popular place
for affluent Kenyans and foreigners to hangout at. Among the 67 people killed, there were people
from at least twelve different nations. The Shabaab views any nonbelievers as belligerents
and heretics. This attack on the Nairobi
Westgate mall is just one of the latest attacks done by Islamic extremists. Of
course, terrorism has always been around, but with the new global scale is
pointing to new arising issues.
This article seems to be very straightforward with not much
room for different interpretations. Terrorism is a global social problem
because it affects everyone in today’s society no matter where you live. It has become more than just an issue between
different religions because innocent people who just happen to be in the wrong
place at the wrong time are being brutally murdered. The religious extremists
who are performing these attacks feel that they are doing the right thing and
have no problem using force to reinforce their ideas. The attack at the Nairobi
was called “a retaliation” due to Kenyans forces being in Somalia, but Al Qaeda
is known for terrorist attacks due to differences in opinions/religions.
