The June 30th attack on Glasgow airport has many Europeans seeing terrorist attacks in their home as a real threat. Ordinary citizens are realizing that everyone is a target. Unlike the Cold War days when there was a political agenda to every attack, now they face attacks where the primary agenda is to “maim and kill as many as possible”. This has lead Britain to launch their very first terrorism survival course for the common man, “for Joe Public” as they are calling it. This terrorism survival guide is expected to spread throughout the world and even into India, a commonly known high risk area. This day long course comes with a slightly heavy price, but who can put a price on security? It costs 150 euros per person, or about 200 U.S. dollars. They will teach defense tactics against scenarios including suicide bombers, 9/11 type airplane hijackings and attacks with improvised explosive devices. The teachers actually act out these scenarios using pyrotechnics to give authenticity to the situations. These courses put an emphasis on “the three A’s, awareness, anticipation and avoidance”. Each course allows only fifteen enrollees at a time and already has many on a waiting list. There are already some similar courses to this one available to the public in the United States. Soon, they will be available throughout the world. With terrorism threats lurching in our everyday lives, this may be one way to help people feel at ease in a world full of chaos.
