With China's one child policy long under way, some are starting to second guess their decision to push the stop button at just one child. They are beginning to wonder what will happen when parents are elderly and they leave the burden of taking care of them to the one child they decided to have. What if that child becomes disabled, chronically ill or even dies at an early age? Who will take care of them? That leaves alot of burden on just one person and their spouse. Not to mention that they also have to care for themselves, their spouse and their own children. How will they finacially be able to do this? It seems that there will be far too many elderly out of work people and not enough working people to support them. What china thought would be a great advantage to their economy, might be a huge downfall in a few decades. What will become of this economically growing country when the older generations now become elderly and/or ill? In China it has always been custom for the children to assume the responsibility of taking care of their parents when they become elderly. It is usually the responsibility of the male child. If there was more than one male it would make it easier for them to split the responsibilities but since they have the one child policy, it leaves just the one child to do the responsibilities they usually 2 or more share. It leaves great concern for the generations today for their wellbeing tomorrow. It would extremely difficult to know that you can't have more than one male child and wonder if they will be able to care for you when you need it later.
