Heroin production

Many people are unaware that one of the ways that Taliban rebel forces fund their efforts against the Afghan government and their western allies is through international drug trafficking. The production of poppies is strongly encouraged by Taliban forces. The poppy produces a way more valuable substance called heroin, which is trafficked internationally. The U.S. has tried to interceed in the production of poppies in Afghanistan, however the value of poppies in Afghanistan is ten times higher in Afghanstan than regular crops such as wheat.

Although the U.S. has spent over 600 million dollars in efforts to stop the production of drugs in Afghanistan, the efforts have been null and void. Until the Afghan government raises security standards and drug demand from Western Afghanistan is minimized, the drug problem will be nowhere near being solved.
