Ghana: Ethnicity and Religion in Ghana’s Politics
http://allafrica.com/stories/200708131045.html
After reading the article I was able to find information about Ghana and their way of politics, which is a multi-party democracy which believes that everyone’s opinion should be able to be heard. Although before this type of party was able to be put into effect, they believed that politics should be based on religiosity and ethnicity. This in turn formed several parties such as the MAP, or the Muslim Association Party, CPP, or the Convention Peoples Party, and the NPP, or the Northern Peoples Party. This of course caused some conflict which resulted in the Muslim Association Party and the Northern Peoples Party to go against the Convention Peoples Party. It even went as far as a quote that was said by the chairman saying that “True Muslims can never be friends with the CPP”. So because of all the differences they decided to keep religion and ethnicity out of their politics. Although eventually over time the NPP did learn to let their guard down a little.
From what I take of this, it is just like the many problems that we face in the world today. If someone does not look like you, talk like you, act like you, etc. then we feel that they are different so we tend to pick sides. I am not an expert and this is just my opinion based on what I read from this article, but it sounds like there were differences based on ethnicity and religion due to the fact that they were from different places so they did not get along which to me would make it hard to do what they were trying to do which was politics.
