There is a growing suspicion that government security organizations of Sri Lanka are responsible for kidnapping 1000 Sri Lankan people who they suspect to be involved with a group called LTTE, a group promoting peace and independence in the country. While it has not been proved that the government has anything to do with these disappearances, the truth is that this many people being taken would not have gone through the tight security check points of this country unless the government was involved.
Suyambu Nadar Ketheeswaran is one of the victims, as he called his wife to say he was on his way home and never showed up. His brothers were kidnapped too. Similarly, the government entered the home of Vairamthu Varatharasan and asked his wife to go get their identification cards. She went to the back room to get the cards, and when she returned, her husband had been taken away. The police station later told her that he had been attained for his participation in LTTE, but she says she does not recall him ever having anything to do with this organization.
Women with children are losing their husbands and older sons, and have no idea what has happened to them. The government denies kidnapping this mass quantity of people, yet police stations are being uncooperative in their search. The chair of human rights in Sri Lanka tell these women that their husbands have most likely " just migrated, or ran off with lovers." Despite this, 1000 citizens have gone missing in a close span of time. 2,002 have gone missing since February.
Great Britain has agreed to pay half of Sri Lanka's debt if the two countries can sit down and work out a new "plan" for the country. There has been a civil war raging in Sri Lanka for 20 years, and finally, international concerns are beginning to rise since it seems that human rights are deteriorating in this country.
This situation is horrifying, especially since women are now fleeing the country to the Middle East, so they can afford living expenses. A few men have been found, but 845 are still missing from the 2000 that have disappeared since February. No one is speaking about what really happened, or where these men went after they disappeared. 70% of the Sri Lankan population believe that government is responsible for these kidnappings.
