This week, I chose to write not so much about a crime taking place, but more about what is being done to end one. This article is about the crisis in Darfur. I will say right off that I am slightly ignorant about all of the details of what is going on over there and why it is happening but I do know that more can be done to stop it. That is why I chose this article.
The article is about the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, making it his mission to see that this crisis comes to an end. He is working on bringing together the largest peacekeeping operation in the world, with a joint effort by the United Nations and the African Union. Ban is making it his mission to see that 26,000 UN-AU troops are deployed to bring aid and relieve the situation in Darfur. Unfortunately, the full force of this operation will not hit until mid-2008. Thus far, more than 200,000 people have died and many more displaced because of the violence and famine.
The true crime here, aside form the pointless, brutal murders of innocent people, is that it has taken so long to give this crisis the aid and attention it needs to be solved. Surely, more will die and starve by the time this operation has taken full affect, but I’m relieved to hear that measures are being taken and people like Ban have made the resolution to this problem top priority.
