"India : Wake up call for Govt on child labor issue"

On October 31, a notice was sent to the Dehli Goverment of India concerning labor issues. The state High Court sent this notice based on a petition filed by a voluntary agency. This notice swayed the government to take necessary steps to rehabilitate child laborers rescued from south Delhi’s embroidery units. In the petition, the Bachpan Bachao Andolan ('Save Childhood Agitation') of Swami Agnivesh claimed that the government is disregarding these children as bonded laborers. Although this issue has been suspended until Decemeber 12, the court is seeking answers from the Department of Social Welfare of the city Government. They wish to uncover the reason why the system has constantly neglected the need to check child labor in the capital even though there have been many notifications. When asked about the recent issues, Shri Vijay Kumar Agarwal, Chairman of Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) said “The recent Gap Inc. matter is an isolated case. As for measures to check child labour, we have prepared and sent a legal affidavit to all our exporters stating that no such practice would be entertained by our council.”

I am very glad to see that the Indian government and court system is finally going to look at this growing problem. India is one of the world's leaders in child labor and it is time for that to change. This proves that you do not necessarily have to be part of the government to make a change. This investigation was promted by a volunteer petition. If people try to combat the child labor in their country as well as others, we could make the world safer for the children of these industrializing countries.
