Sunday, Iran confirmed that they had arrested a well-known Iranian-American. Later a strict newspaper accused her of being a spy of the United States and trying to start a revolution inside Iran. Haleh Esfandiari’s was arrested based on the fact that the Iranian government has a growing fear that the United States is using pro-democracy advocates to promote regime change. Esfandiari, director of the Middle East Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars in Washington, went to Iran in order to visit her ailing mother in law. When she was in Iran she was prohibited from leaving for four months then she was forced on Tuesday to Iran’s notorious Evin prison. Esfandiari’s group and husband both deny that Haleh was involved in any such activities.
This is a terrible situation that no one should have to endure. Haleh was never convicted of a crime but she still received the punishment for it. The Iran government had no right to arrest someone just because they are scared that they will start a revolution. As soon as Iran took away Haleh’s right to leave they removed her human right. The main reason that Iran did that was because they do not have a democratic government and they were afraid that Haleh was attempting to create a democratic government. There is an easy solution to this problem and it is to create a democratic government. If a democratic government occurs then people will begin to get there human rights back. Haleh should never have experience the loss of her human rights and other people are going to experience the same thing if Iran doesn’t change.
