On November 1, 2007, the Israeli military forces discovered tunnels that are run under the borders of Egypt and Gaza. Officials stated that the tunnels have been used to smuggle militants. They were also used to as part of the groups “weapons supply mechanism.” These tunnels have been blown up.
A representative of the Hamas group in Gaza recognized that the group has been bringing various weapons through the tunnels. The tunnels also serve as a black market for goods such as cigarettes, which have become scarce because of the restrictions from Israel that have been places on all imports since June, when the Hamas took over Gaza.
The tension has risen over the past few days. Thursday morning, Palestinian militants fired nine rockets in the direction of Israel. One rocket damaged a building in Sderot, which is a town on the border of Israel. The Israeli Air Force fired at the militants while ground forces shot at groups in the south. Ten Palestinians were wounded between the two raids. Wednesday night, Israel released a video of Gaza militants firing mortar rounds from an elementary school yard. The mortar rounds took place in the northern part of the town of Beit Hanoun. A resident of this town said the militants were part of the Hamas military wing.
I find this article to be disturbing. I do not believe it is right for militants to be firing from an elementary school. From reading the article, I would be scared for the lives of my children in that school, even though the firings did not take place until night fall. A spokesman from the UNRWA “condemned the use of its schools ‘by militants and during military operations.’” Therefore, why was this group not stopped and why have they not been punished for going against the UNRWA? Do they think that using a school yard is a good idea? Do they not realize that by using this area, they are putting images and thoughts that firing missiles and rockets into the minds of these young children?
