Many people are concerned with the lack of progress by Mexico's Human Rights Commission. People are claiming that too many cases are not being investigated enough. After looking at more than 40 human rights cases, it is clear that the Human Rights Commision is failing to push for accountability for human rights violations. These violations are being commited by military and other law enforcement institutions. This is not a good sign for the country due to the recent abuse of citizens by President Felipe Calderon. The President is using the military to help crack down on drug trafficking. The military has been accused of torturing, raping, and murdering innocent civilians in this process.
In my opinion, this is not something to be taken lightly. This is not occuring in some far away land that most people have barely even heard of. This is happening a matter of miles away from us. It astounds me that nothing is being done to help prevent this. I know that drug trafficking is a problem in Mexico, however, this treatment towards civilians that have not been convicted of anything is far from "un-called for." The treatment is down right disgusting. This topic has recieved interest from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, two very reputable organizations that fight for human rights world-wide. I am hoping that attention from organizations like these will help encourage Mexico to devote more of their time towards this issue. This type of treatment is inhumane and should be stopped immediately. It scares me to think that this is happening so close to home.
