Rebecca Hauser/Saturday, April 5/1:20am/human rights
The news of Argentina's "dirty wars" is not new news today. The world has known of these atrocities for quite some time now. However, new court cases are being held that have ties to back during this dreadful time. Hundreds of people were abducted by the state's security forces. Many of the people that went "missing" were parents, some women even pregnant. The young children, mostly infants, of these people were taken by the military and placed in to homes that wanted children. All of these new adoptive parents were friends/family of the people in the military. Many of these children have lived their lives knowing nothing until recently. Now, these "adopted" 30 year olds are learning the truth and are horrified at what they are finding. Some are so infuriated that they are taking the military to court.
I feel that these people have every right to be as mad as they are. To not tell someone who they are and where they came from is taking something valuble and precious away from them. Knowledge is a human right. These children were denied this. Though it was a good deed to accept a child into their homes and raise them as their own, these adoptive parents should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. I am baffled at how they have been able to live with such a dark lie all these years.
(sorry this is submitted late, i have been sick. now that I have slept all day, i am WIDE awake!)
