I’m writing about an article that I found on the B92 website. It talks about the meeting between the Religion minister and the Serbian Muslim Leader. This happened on April 04, 2008, they came to accordance that Muslims in Serbia enjoyed the same constitutionally guaranteed rights as worshippers of other faiths and churches.
At this meeting Zilkić asked for the Riaset of the Islamic community of Serbia to be officially registered under the Law on Churches and Religious Communities. With this the Reis informed the minister of the problems his Islamic community faces as a result of the unresolved problem of single leadership in the Islamic religious community and how it greatly affects the Muslims in Serbia.
In that, Naumov stated that these problems should be resolved as soon as possible to prevent any undesirable and unnecessary conflicts among Muslims but he also stated that the only resolution he had was for the problem be resolved through an agreement within the Islamic community. Naumov also stated that there was only one Islamic community in the eyes of the Government, and that the resolution of internal conflicts was not the responsibility of the state.
The conflict stems from the discord between the Novi Pazar based Meshihat of the Islamic Community in Serbia, headed by Mufti Moamer Zukorlić, whose spiritual center is in Sarajevo, and the Islamic community of Serbia, headed by Zilkić, whose center is in Belgrade.
As I see this the problems within the Islamic community could at some point become serious and the only solution that the religious minister gave to the Serbian Muslim Leader was to look with in his own community because they couldn’t do anything for him and his Muslim community. I really don’t see this as any help at all, but I guess of Zilkić can get his Islamic community a good revision and see what he could do to resolve his problems because apparently the Religious Minister isn’t giving any help towards this situation.
