Russia says it does not want new Iron Curtain

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday, September 19, 2008 that he did not want disputes with the West to push Russia behind a new Iron Curtain. He also blamed NATO for provoking last month's conflict in Georgia. In an address to a gathering of civil society groups Medvedev said, "We are in effect being pushed down a path that is founded not on fully-fledged, civilized partnership with other countries, but on autonomous development, behind thick walls, behind an Iron Curtain.” Medvedev also said, “That is not our path. For us there is no sense going back to the past. We have made our choice.” Medvedev advertised a need for a new European security mechanism, saying the NATO alliance’s role in the Georgia conflict showed it was unable to provide security in Europe. All NATO did, Medvedev believes, is provoke the conflict.

Medvedev’s want for the Iron Curtain not to return is a nice sentiment, though I fear his country’s actions have been to the contrary. As we all know, actions speak louder than words, especially in terms of global relations. I am sure that NATO’s involvement in the Georgian conflict did not only provoke the conflict. I am sure NATO did some good in the situation. I do not know exactly who provoked whom, or who started the conflict, but I am sure that Russian action in the conflict was and is unnecessary. All we can do is wait and see the facts after further investigations are conducted. I hope neither Georgia nor Russia is provoked in any way in the meantime.
