Fifty-six ethnic groups are present in China, of these ethnic groups, the Muslim ethnic group is a very diverse group. Two of the Muslim groups are the Uighurs and the Han. The Han has dominated the Uighurs for a long time, with several attempts to destroy the Uighur population. The diversity between the two groups is due to the difference in language, culture, and customs.
The cruelty of the Han toward the Muslims has caused many separatist groups to form. It is believed that many of these organizations, such as The East Turkestan Islamic Movement and The East Turkestan Liberation Organization, used the Olympic games as a way to advertise their distress from the oppression that constantly occurs in China. They achieved their advertisements by the bombings that occurred during that time.
The Chinese government has issued many restrictions on the Muslim populations to hopefully prevent anymore damage. These restrictions include banning women from wearing veils and public figures from observing Ramadan. The government has said these restrictions will assure stability in the region where the Uighur live.
This summer many deadly attacks occurred in the Xinjiang region of China. As a result of advocation for independence, several Muslim separatist group were to blame. The government has now began to punish all Uighurs for the acts of a small section of their population. The government wants to provide stability and unity in the country, but the likely result is resentment and rebellion which will cause more outbreaks and instability.
