Rohingya refugees from Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) who are attempting to escape social unrest there have used boats small and large to sail to safety. IN Burma they have basically no rights: policies against them cause them to be "stateless". While there they can be brought under forced labor and all property can be taken from them.
On their sail to safety they were rescued and accepted by India while Thailand has forcibly pushed them away. Thai forces have sent them back in less than seaworthy boats basically sentencing them to death on the open sea. The UN is pushing fro assistance from all nations to help these refugees and some who are stranded on outlying islands off the coast of thailand await there fate.
I think this is a terrible situation as well as a good one. Terrible in that people are forcibly removed from places they have lived all their lives and sad how Thailand will not assist them. IT is a very good thought that many other countries however are assisting these "stateless" people in finding a new home in the world.
