Salma Hayeck on "Mothers working together"

Many of us know Salma Hayeck for her red carpet appearances and entertaining movies. She has recently become involved with a project to help women in Sierra Leone to give their children a very important vaccine that could save their lives. 21% of infant deaths are related to Tetanus, a treatable and extremely uncommon disease in the United States. It costs only 74 cents to treat this disease, and yet more and more children are dying because of lack of health care and knowledge about this disease.

Hayeck began sponsoring Pampers, so that whenever someone buys a supply of diapers, the company will donate one vaccine to the babies of Sierra Leone. This is something very treatable, and Hayeck wants to make sure that these mothers do not have to see their children suffer.

There are so many problems in the world, but it is so heartbreaking to see things like this occur when they could be stopped so easily. You cannot put a pricetag on a life, but when 74 cents is the difference between life and death it is very sad to see so many babies dying. Hayeck started this with the hope that mothers would be helping other mothers around the world. I think that this is a very moving idea; feelings of motherhood are shared through out the world, and from the richest to the poorest mother, any one can feel the hurt that it is to lose a child. Even though it may take a lot of time, I hope that one day things so small like this will not be an issue for developing countries.
