This year, due to many factors including the current economic crisis, colleges are making many changes to their admissions procedures. Some, including colleges like McAlister are planning to admit up to 10-11% more applicants in order to see if they will be able to keep an incoming class of freshman. This year, colleges are not sure if they will be able to admit enough incoming freshman to “stay in business” so to speak. New factors including rising tuition costs seem to be keeping many potential students away from attending college, which is a concern for colleges across the nation.

It is my opinion that in order for colleges to be able to meet the demand for the financial needs of students attending college, that there needs to be more initiative on the federal level to assist those in need, in addition to reforming our student loan system currently controlled by the banks. On a worldwide level, the rising tuition costs for colleges and less opportunities to attend these institutions means it undermines our ability to compete in the global environment. If college attendance goes down, it means that there will be less funding going to these research institutions and thus, we will be developing fewer technologies to compete with in the globalized world. There should be more spending by the education department to insure the advancement of our society to a higher level of competition.

College is becoming more expensive year, but I agree with you, if the university provide incoming students with more ways of paying for school, they wouldnt have decline in freshman class students.

After reviewing this article I do agree that the number of admitted college freshman are declining yearly, and as these numbers continue to decline, college tuition continues to increase. I do agree with McAlister's plan to admit up to 10-11% more applicants in order to keep an incoming class of freshman. I also agree with your idea, if students recieved more financial aid to attend school they wouldn't have to worry about the number of applicants declining.
