A Finnish man by the name of Jerry Jalava has taken his body to the next level by adding a unique prosthetic to it. Because of a motorcycle crash with a deer he had to have his left ring finger amputated, he then made a prosthetic for his lost finger that folds back to reveal that within it is a 2 gig flashdrive. The finger is easily detachable and allows him to work and not be tied to his computer. Mr. Jalava must finds this "USB finger" helpful because of his job as a software developer; it gives him a convenient place to store his data and keep it where ever he goes. Mr. Jalava says the idea came to him when the doctors who did his amputation found out about his career and made joking remarks that he should made a "USB finger drive." He has said that he has plans to "upgrade" the next prosthetic he's working on further to have a removable fingernail and RFID tag (used for identification purposes).
A situation like this is both very interesting and potentially a view of the future. Despite the fact that prosthetics are viewed as something only for cripples so too was plastic surgery only viewed as a last resort for burn victims and those in Hollywood. Instead of carrying around all the things that you needed through your day what if for instance you had an in ear cell phone that operated by voice or a camera whose shudder was a part of your eye and took pictures when and where you need them? Though those examples seem like science fiction so to would someone with a "USB finger" not more than a decade ago. The world wide ramifications of more powerful and smaller technology are changing the paradigms and structure of our society in ways that aren't even noticeable if not looked at directly. This story might seem like a bit of a side show but it could also just be a taste of things to come.

a USB finger? that is so cool! That is very creative and I would imagine, very handy too. Plus, he always has his flash drive on him. No more getting his mixed up with someone else's.
Thats amazing and hilarious. I'd say id want one, but that sounded painful. He must have a great sense of humor. By the way Nice pun michelle, "...and i would imagine, very handy too."
hahaha
I thought this blog was really funny.. I can't believe that someone would have this done! But, I have to say I usually always loose my USB so for me it would probably come in handy! hah just like michelle stated.
Hmmm, the future at hand. Great story. It does just sound like an amusing tale but the ramifications are certainly obvious for those with an open mind. It's acutally quite practical. You've got to appreciate the humor, creativity, and insight.
