In Japan, marriage rates are at a high as the recession continues. Women being called "marriage-hunters" are looking for financially secure men to help them in the failing economy. Many women claim that they have been on the job track for many years with very little interest in marriage, but now they need another salary to fall back on.
Japan isn't the only country with booming marriage rates though; numbers seem to be up all across the world! It is a lot cheaper to support two people in one household and therefore people are falling back on this financial tool.
In Japan, "marriage-hunting bars" have been created where men pay over one hundred dollars to be set up with women by their waiters. Also, one of the only companies that seems to have booming numbers in this poor economy, is a Japanese dating website.
I think that it is kind of sad to see that people are looking for partners based soley on financial reasons. Women that didn't have any desire to get married are now looking because they can no longer afford to live alone. I understand that the economy is not doing so well right now, and that this trend is nothing shocking considering the economy, but I hate to see people marrying for the wrong reasons. I just think that once the recession is over, the divorce rate is going to have a severe increase again.

This directly relates to the gender studies we were looking at earlier in class. The differences in how women and men are treated, and that women in the workforce are still a minority in terms of preference and pay. This inequality leads to things like this, when they have to resort to finding husbands as financial sources.
I mean desperate times certainly call for desperate measures! I can say I am currently unemployed and I'm thinking about getting hitched myself (that was a joke). Honestly, if this is all they know or what has been given to them as a way out why wouldn't they take it? This is no worse than an arranged marraige that still happens today!
