Australia says arsonists could face 25 years in jail

Australia’s deadly February wildfire that claimed 173 lives has the government upping the ante on punishment for arson. Australia plans on making national arson laws that result in a maximum penalty of 25 years.
Although the fire was wild, the destruction of over 2,000 homes has caused officials to realize that a deliberately lit fire could easily cause as much destruction.
Each of Australia’s states and territories has their own arson laws, but the Australian government wants to nationally wipe out this crime. Already a man has been arrested on arson charges at Churchill and police are hunting for a second who committed arson in Marysville, which resulted in 34 deaths.
Remember when Mommy told you not to play with fire? Well, she was right. It is very dangerous and can cause more destruction than a simple shooting. Lives as well as homes are completely destroyed. And, depending on the current climate, arson-caused fires can blaze with miraculous power equivalent to that of the February wildfire. Arsonists should be punished, especially when their actions result in the loss of lives. Maybe their goal wasn’t to kill anyone, just to set a few trees on fire, but fires light homes and in those homes are people. Everyone should be responsible for their stupid actions. And like I said—Mother was right about those matches.

I feel this would be a smart law to enforce. Even if someones goal wasn't to harm anyone people need to realize what might could happen and just how serious setting a fire is. Certain weather conditions certainly could feed a fire for days or weeks. It's a dangerous thing that should be taken serious.

I agree this would be smarter to enforce, people would realize that setting a fire is very serious and people would maybe change the way of how they are carful. Any small thing could start a fire and people need to realize this.
