In Rememberance of Va Tech

Two years ago America was shocked to learn that yet another school slaying had taken place. A student took it upon himself to go on a shooting spree and kill numerous innocent people. Two families are separtely sueing the school and the state for gross negliance. They claim that the school did not do an adequte job to protect their students. After reading the reports I was shocked to learn that the campus was not informed immediately that two students were killed in a dorm by the same guy who went on to kill 32 other students and himself!

The lawsuits claim Virginia Tech failed to protect its students and is directly liable for gross negligence. They further claim the university is liable for a few of its officers and employees "who were deliberately indifferent to the safety needs of its students."Virginia Tech owed Pryde and Peterson "a reasonably safe campus" and breached its duties, which the lawsuits call a "proximate cause of" their deaths. The lawsuits further accuse Virginia Tech of trying to cover up the start of the killing spree at a dormitory that morning rather than warning students that an armed man was on campus.

This story really makes me woner how safe are colleges across the world and why is it a common thing in the U.S but hardly ever mentioned in other countries?

So I understand that these parents are hurt and its hard to lose a child but I do not feel like it is the colleges fault that this happened to their children.

College campuses are very safe, there are a lot of security and many dorms require a key of electronic device to get into the dorm- - that might i add every college student complains about because they have to wait to get into a friends dorm.

Somehow this man got in this dorm and no body knew what his intentions were.. thats sad but if there were police officers on each hall of a dorm students would HATE that because they would not get any privacy.

I dont agree with what these parents are doing but I guess they have their valid reasons

I agree with Amanda. I do feel bad for the parents loss but at the same time the whole incident should not be blamed on the school. Just think if a killer went on a shooting spree at Walmart, who would be blamed for the safety of those people? However, the school should have let the students know that there was an armed student on campus as soon as the first shooting occurred.
