An eleven year old girl from in India got in trouble for not completing her homework the previous night. Since she did not complete her homework her teacher thought that her punishment should be to stand in the hot sun in the middle of the day in India. The girl got a bloody nose from the hot sun and eventually fainted. She went to the hospital and died since she slipped into a coma from the sun. The teacher who had the girl sent outside and the school principal are both facing charges and are both suspended from the school. The article said that it is not unusual for teachers to use physical punishment on the students but this act went too far.

I am an education major and to hear this is just absurd. I know that different countries punish children in different ways from the United States but this just seems cruel. It is extremely hot in India in the middle of the day and the teacher, being a grown up, should have known that it would cause harm on the child. An alternative assignment for the student would have been to do the homework during lunch or give the child silent lunch for not doing the homework. Having the child stand in the scorching sun for not doing homework is wrong and both the teacher and the principal should get charged with her death.

Unbelievable! Here in the U.S it used to be controversial to hit kids with a paddle; I can not imagine being sent to stand in the sun. The teacher should have had enough sense to know that the child could dehydrate. I wander if the child was too afraid to go back inside and tell the teacher that they weren't feeling well. I am not going to say that the U.S punishes students better, but that type of behavior was irresponsible and should have been dealt with another way.
