Beer Goodness

Anheuser-Busch is now doing its small part to save the environment via 6 acres of solar panels. The panels are to produce an estimated 1.8 million kilowatt hours of energy anually, and, "over two decades, will produce more than 33 million kwh, enough to power 3,190 average U.S. homes for a year." That's like taking 3,500 cars off the road for a year. However, all this energy accounts for only about 3 percent of the brewery's total electricity needs.

15 percent of the fuel needs are met by alternative means thanks to a bio-energy recovery system, which turns nutrients in plant wastewater into gas. This means that 1 in 7 beers in America, or 5 billion beers anually, is made with alternative energy.

It has also been noted that since 2004, by concerving, innovating, and using alternative fuels Anheuser-Busch has decreased fuel use by 38 percent, water use by 32 percent, and electricity use by 14 percent.

Beer is on board. Not only is it cool that a huge corporation is doing something to change things, but a major line has been crossed if enough American beer drinkers care about the state of the planet to encite a huge corporation to do something to change things. That really is saying something.

Always disappointed, however; 3 percent? I know it's still a lot but make it 5 or 10 or 15! Get real. They've got the money... I guess they just don't care THAT much.

It is true that having a large corporation take part in more sustainable practices is a large step in our movemeent towards a more environmentally friendly society. It gives me hope! Thanks!

3% isn't much, but it is better than nothing. At least they are starting to make progress, which is usually very slow moving anyway. A start in the right direction, I guess it's worth a beer & a cheers.
